| Enclosed Birch 8.5" D 7" H |

I had turned this hollow vessel out of spalted birch, and it was another one of those that just sat on my shelf for a while. It was a beautiful piece, but the hole (used to get tools in for hollowing) bothered me. An opening makes sense in a bowl or a vase, but in a purely decorative piece of sculpture it occasionally bothers me, as it did in this case. There are times when I have applied various treatments to it, but this time, I decided to plug the hole with another piece of wood, and then sanded it down to make it continuous with the rest of the piece. To hide the hole I covered it with birch bark, and sanded that also so that the various layers showed in different places. At this point, I realized that with the hole covered, there was no reason for there to be a top or a bottom, and the piece could be positioned any way I felt like. So, I made a base for it, with a hollow which would support the piece, and the owners could position it in any direction, and change it whenever they wished. This piece was given as a gift by a meditation group to their leader. |
